ARTIST’S INTENTION
Create a contemporary sculpture that wholly represents the mission, vision, and values of Memorial
Hermann Health System—a grand public art experience of the journey to vibrant health, inspiring the spirit
of vitality, and channeling a distinct combination of medicine, technology, nature, and humanity.

CREATIVE INSPIRATION
Intellectual wellness conceptions of healing involve reordering an individual’s sense of position in the
universe and define healing as ‘the personal experience of transcending suffering and transforming to
wholeness.’

In tandem with this conception of the healing process, the concept design in this proposal—HELIOS—is
inspired by the all-encompassing energy, intensity, radiance, and healing powers of the sun. Within its
core, there is an intensity of energy that extends and gives us light and warmth here on planet Earth.
Similarly, Memorial Hermann encapsulates core strength and devotion to the path of good health for all,
radiating outward in all directions to reach and heal the community. These sculptural concepts embody
healing and sustainment of life, our ability to prosper in good health, and hope for the future health of our
civilization.

TITLE AND DESCRIPTION
HELIOS is a total celebration of the expansion, growth, and infinite outreach of Memorial Hermann to the
community and the institution’s commitment to a future that strives to bring good health to all.
In ancient mythical times, ‘Helios’ was the Titan god of the sun, guardian of oaths, god of sight. HELIOS
represents the life force that exposes all humanity to its positive effects, a powerful source of ultimate
healing.

In designing and building HELIOS, a layering technique will be used to create the infinite, contemporary
shape and open, flowing surface skin. The process is in correlation to the concept that extreme pressure
inside the sun’s core builds up and releases outward to result in the creation of radiant energy. HELIOS is a
meditative, abstract composition—brilliant and reflective, inviting and regenerative
